The conservation story of the Little Penguins (Eudyptula Minor) at Millowl (Phillip Island) in Victoria boarders on legend. The buyback of holiday houses by the state government to return the landscape to nature, the creation of a multi-million dollar complex that allows humans and wildlife to co-exist in harmony, the exponential rise in population of the Little Penguin colony, now approaching 40 thousand penguins.. it is the stuff most conservationists dream of. Sadly, this isn’t the case for all of the Little Penguin colonies along the South Coast of Australia and in New Zealand. In some cases, populations have been reduced by as much as 1600 to 20 due to bushfire, invasive introduced species (especially foxes) and human carelessness. What the Millowl complex does offer us, is hope. It clearly demonstrates that we can live in harmony with our wildlife, and we are able to enjoy the best of what each other brings to the landscape. So the piece you are about to hear, entitled “Feathered Angels”, celebrates the quirky, animated and fragile nature of these amazing birds. But most of all, it sends a message of hope that one day, we will learn from this success story, and urbanise our country in conjunction with the needs of our precious wildlife. Wildlife that identifies us as Australians, wildlife that makes this country of ours feel like home. 10% of all sales are donated to the Australian Penguin Foundation's "Adopt a Penguin" program. This work was commissioned by a consortium led by Caulfield Grammar School, Victoria, Australia. Led by conductor Mr. Simon Brown.
