Soar High is a fast-paced, energetic, and joyful composition for young bands that is fun to play and an inspiration for the audience. Based on letters from classmates of a young band student who died unexpectedly, the piece captures Maya’s positive spirit and legacy.

Program Notes

Soar High was commissioned in memory of a very special student, Maya Tarbet, who died unexpectedly while still in middle school. When I was asked to write this piece, I didn’t know Maya and asked the students of the William Ellis Middle school 8th grade band to send me letters to try to help me learn about her and what kind of person she was. What they wrote was very moving and revealing. I discovered she always brought a smile to those around her and had lots of energy. Hopefully, Soar High reflects that positive, playful force that was Maya and inspires the audience and performers with her true spirit.
