Sub Zero is a bright jazz shuffle in the style of New York’s legendary Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. The title reflects the composer’s memories of his first visit to hear the band at the Village Vanguard in New York City during the depths of Winter. Standing in line outside awaiting admission to the late show while hearing short busts of the band’s roaring first set when the front doors occasionally opened, the temperature outside the venue was 7 degrees below zero - Celsius of course! For this Australian composer, used to a much warmer climate, it was a freezing but memorable wait in the snow - one that was rewarded tenfold when finally admitted to sit in the warm glow of the band’s iconic sound.
