Rhythmania by Ingrid Koller is a piece that will have young string orchestra students on the edge of their seats as they focus on counting to stay on track in this mixed meter piece. This D major level 1.5 piece introduces the concept of mixed meters in a fun and engaging way. The piece moves between 6/8 and 2/4 but there are lots of eighth notes to subdivide the beats and help with counting. A contrasting D minor section allows the students to settle into 6/8 for awhile, but soon the original mixed meter melody returns. Every section gets a chance to shine as they play the melody and every section gets to provide the important subdivided harmony part. Striking the right balance of challenge and fun, it is the perfect piece to introduce young string players to the very important skill of counting in mixed meters. (3:00)
