Amapola is a Spanish love song composed in 1920 by Spanish American composer Jose Maria Lacalle Garcia (1859-1937). The title translates into English as the flower "poppy." Garcia, known in America as Joseph M. Lacalle, was a professional clarinetist who played in a number of the popular bands of his era including the John Philip Sousa Band. Amapola was recorded by numerous artists from operatic tenors to popular crooners. In 1941 it reached #1 on the Billboard charts. It was also featured in a number of movie soundtracks. Its lyrics have been translated into multiple languages.
