Pitfall is a powerfully infectious Soca with a surprising, double-time rock groove. The rhythm section has an opportunity to trade solos and energizing the crowd before closing with a driving end. Originally written for the Ohio Northern University Steel Drum Band, it is still one of their favorite closers and is a hit with the audience.

Program Notes

Pitfall was written to be a closer/finale for a steel drum band’s setlist. Three unique grooves are featured throughout the composition as a functioning crescendo to let your group let loose (soca, latin and rock). There are two opportunities to let soloists trade solos and build the song’s intensity further. Once the final section is reached, the natural crescendo throughout the entire piece ensures your steel drum band to end on an energetic note.

Imagine being chased in the jungle by disgruntled crocodiles. Quickly you dodge fallen, weather-worn palm trees and moss-covered rocks while realizing there’s a river you must jump across to ensure your safety. Will your escape come at the expense of how much strength you can muster? This song is intended to be played as if your life depends on it.

Pitfall was originally performed by the Ohio Northern steel drum band in Ada, Ohio in February 2009 at a composer’s workshop.
