The “Music for the Royal Fireworks” (HWV 351) by George Frideric Handel was first performed on April 27th 1749 on the occasion of a fireworks display given by King George II in London’s Green Park. This suite is Handel’s second significant example of “open-air music” after the “Water Music”. The first performance was played by musicians sitting in boats on the Thames; a dress rehearsal had been held shortly before for an enthusiastic audience of 12,000. The king had expressly commissioned the work as an “overture for military instruments” and the orchestra therefore consisted of 112 musicians (16 oboes, 15 bassoons, 20 horns, 40 trumpets, 1 double-bassoon, 8 pairs of timpani and 12 drums).

The Overture from the “Fireworks Music” has been specially arranged for the “eXplora” series of music for youth band by Alfred Bösendorfer so that even beginners are able to perform Handel’s splendid music and thereby gain a very practical insight into music history.
