Mr Suit and Tie is written in tribute to the late Nick Mulder - a friend, colleague, and a wonderfully gifted trombonist and composer whose presence lit up every ensemble he played with. Nick had a distinctive mix of sharp musicality, quick wit, and effortless style, all of which shaped the spirit of this piece. While he never had the chance to hear this work or to know it was written for him, Nick's style and influence is woven through every bar. Mr Suit and Tie aims to capture the energy he brought to the bandstand: warm, clever, a little cheeky, and always impeccably put together. Featuring the Trombone section in a medium slow "Thad Jones" style swing chart, Mr Suite and Tie showcases the ability of the trombones to dig in, but also to show the versatility of the instrument. This piece stands as a celebration of Nick's musicianship and the joy he created around him, offering players and audiences alike a chance to remember him with a smile.
