The second section depicts a mischievous river, the Yakima River in Washington state. I lived near it for a short time and visited periodically, always thinking how beautiful and lazy it was, until one day when I waded into it and was almost swept away by the deceivingly strong current. Our path took us near the city of Joplin, where we arrived ten minutes after an EF5 tornado leveled a large part of town. Soon afterwards I wrote this piece both in honor of the tornado's victims as well as to show respect for the sheer power and destructive potential of these storms. Two years later I found myself in Oklahoma, just in time to witness the devastation that another EF5 tornado wrought on the city of Moore. I have since added a dedication to the victims of that storm as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’ve attempted to depict the series of events that occurred during those outbreaks, starting with a glorious sunrise and gradually progressing through the gathering clouds to the tornado’s arrival. After the storm leaves there is a mournful section, reflecting the overwhelming sense of despair and grief at the destruction and death tornadoes inevitably leave behind. What is shown afterwards, however, is something that all of us have within them, something that allows us to rebuild and move on with our lives even if left with absolutely nothing. Capturing the essence of a place that provided me so many different types of opportunities to me meant that I needed to have a piece with multiple styles. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eMoxie\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e is in two sections, both primarily utilizing a minimalistic approach. The first section having a heavier sounding, more hip-hop based style, with the second section being more subdued and melodious. I have long found a large deal of inspiration from the energy of hip-hop artist Mac Miller. His performance on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert that happened a few short weeks before his unexpected passing in September 2018 had an immense impact on me as a musician. His performance was so full of excitement\/energy, and I wanted to approach \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eMoxie\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e with that same spirit. At the same time, orchestral music such as Beijing Harmony by Michael Gordon sits on the other side of my musical seesaw. The parable of the rich man and the beggar tells the story of two men who live very different lives and afterlives. Lazarus, a beggar, lives a life of torment, while the unnamed rich man lives a life of luxury; in the afterlife, their fortunes are reversed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe piece begins with a simple melody, first played in the middle register of the marimba, to represent the wealthy man. We aren’t told exactly how wealthy this man is, but the parable indicates he is far better off than the poor man. Lazarus, the poor man, is represented by the same melody played in the bottom octave of the instrument. The piece then moves toward a driving 7\/16 section representing the death of both men. Upon his death, the rich man starts to wonder why he is meant to suffer for all eternity. He pleads for Abraham to dip his finger in water to cool his tongue because he is in pure agony among the fires of Hell.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA slow-moving chorale section portrays Abraham’s initial response to the rich man’s request: Abraham calmly and firmly explains that there is nothing he can do. Realizing all hope for himself is lost, the rich man then begs Abraham to warn his family about his suffering, but he is again denied by Abraham, who says, “they have Moses and the Prophets to warn them.” The rich man repeats his request until eventually Abraham leaves, and the rich man is left to ponder his own suffering. The piece ends with a minor chord that is played five times, one for each of the rich man’s brothers joining him in eternal suffering.
